Water Baptism

What is Water Baptism?

Baptism is a big deal—it's an outward sign of an inward change. When you get baptized, you're publicly showing that you've decided to follow Jesus. Think of it like this: when you go under the water, it's like you're leaving your old life behind. When you come up, it’s like stepping into a new life with Jesus, just like how He died and rose again. This is a key moment in your journey as a disciple of Jesus.

Romans 6:3-4 says it like this: "Are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life."

Why is Baptism Important?

Jesus got baptized, and He told us to do the same. In Matthew 28:19-20 (CSB), He says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you.” Baptism isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a command from Jesus Himself.

What Happens Spiritually?

Baptism is more than just getting wet—there's something spiritual happening. It’s a moment where you publicly declare your faith in Jesus, turning away from your old life and embracing the new one He offers. The Bible shows that as soon as people believed in Jesus, they got baptised.

Colossians 2:12 says, "When you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead."

Following Jesus' Example

Jesus set the example for us. He got baptized by John the Baptist before starting His ministry. When Jesus came out of the water, God said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased" (Matthew 3:17 CSB). It’s a powerful moment where heaven and earth connected, and it’s a model for us to follow.

Who Should Be Baptised?

Baptism is for anyone who has decided to follow Jesus. It’s a personal decision that shows your commitment to live for Him. If you believe in Jesus and are ready to declare that publicly, then baptism is your next step.

Is Baptism Necessary for Salvation?

Nope. Baptism is important, but it’s not what saves you—faith in Jesus does that. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast."

What About Infant Baptism?

We believe baptism is a decision you make when you’re old enough to understand what it means to follow Jesus. However, we do believe in dedicating children to God, just like Hannah did with Samuel in 1 Samuel 1:28 and Mary and Joseph did with Jesus in Luke 2:22. It's a way for parents to commit to raising their tamariki in the ways of Jesus.

What’s the Process Like?

When you’re baptised at The Found, we’ll make sure it’s a meaningful experience. You’ll be surrounded by your church family who are celebrating with you!

You’ll have a chance to share about your journey to faith in Jesus and how following Him has impacted your life - this is always a huge encouragement to those in the room,

We encourage people to invite their friends, family and anyone you wish to include in this special time.

Here’s a bit of a guide:

  • What to Wear: Something dark, supportive, modest and comfortable, that you don’t mind getting wet.

  • What to Expect: You’ll be asked if you’ve decided to follow Jesus. Then, you’ll be gently lowered into the water, don't forget to hold your breath, and brought back up, this symbolising your new life in Christ.

  • Afterwards: We’ll celebrate with you! It’s common to feel a mix of emotions—joy, peace, maybe even a little nervousness beforehand. But remember, this is a beautiful step in your journey.

Look Out for Spiritual Challenges:

Sometimes, life gets tough right after you take a step of faith. Jesus was tempted in the wilderness right after His baptism in Matthew 4:1-11.

It’s normal to face challenges, but don’t worry—you’re not alone. Ephesians 6:10-11 encourages us: "Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armour of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil."

You're Part of a whānau of believers all over the world, and locally at The Found, we’re all about doing life together. Baptism isn’t just a personal decision; it’s a celebration for our whole church family. We’re here to support you, pray for you, and walk alongside you as you continue following Jesus.

If you have any questions or feel a bit unsure, that’s totally okay. We’re here for you, ready to chat, pray, and help you take this awesome step in your faith journey.

Praying for Baptism in the Holy Spirit

This is like hitting the next level in your faith journey - it's about being totally immersed in God's presence and power.

What’s Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Imagine being filled up with God’s Spirit in a way that empowers and transforms you. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about inviting God to do something new and powerful in your life. Jesus promised this when He said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” Acts 1:8 CSB. This isn’t just for the super-spiritual; it’s for anyone who wants to experience a deeper connection with God.

What’s the Infilling?

The infilling of the Holy Spirit is like getting a supercharge for your spiritual life. It’s where the Holy Spirit takes more space in your heart and life, giving you more boldness, peace, and joy. It’s about getting more in tune with God and His plans for you.

Speaking in Tongues - What’s That About?

Speaking in tongues is one way the Holy Spirit can express Himself through you. It’s like a heavenly language that’s deeply personal and connects you with God on a new level. In 1 Corinthians 14:2 (CSB), it says, “For the person who speaks in a tongue is not speaking to people but to God.” It’s a way to pray and worship when words fall short.

How Do You Get There?

1. Pray with Expectation: Start by asking God to fill you with His Spirit. Be open and ready to receive whatever He wants to give you. Luke 11:13 (CSB) says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

2. Be Open and Receptive: It might feel a bit strange at first, and that’s okay. Just be open to the experience and trust that the Holy Spirit is doing something awesome in you.

3. Take a Step of Faith: Sometimes, you need to step out of your comfort zone. If you feel prompted to speak in tongues, go for it. It’s a way of letting go and letting God do His thing.

What If I’m Not Sure?

Totally normal to feel unsure or even a bit nervous. It’s a big step, and it’s okay to have questions. Talk to someone you trust in your church community or seek out guidance from leaders who can support you.

Why It Matters:

This experience can bring new depth to your faith. It’s not about being flashy or showing off—it’s about experiencing God’s love and power in a real and personal way. It can give you fresh strength for everyday life, help you understand Scripture better, and boost your confidence in sharing your faith with others.

Remember, it’s all about your relationship with God. Whether you’re diving into speaking in tongues or simply seeking a deeper connection with the Holy Spirit, it’s a journey worth taking. And guess what? Your church family is here to support you every step of the way!
